I just wrapped up a journey through book of the gospel of John that I have been on since August- with two different groups. During Wednesday Luncheons at Northeast BSU : the Baptist Student Union of Northeast MS…. this was with college students. On Wednesday nights it was with the teenagers of East Booneville Baptist Church. I really enjoy book studies and believe it to be a huge benefit to really understanding books of the Bible. Context matters! The best Bible study help is the Holy Spirit. The next best Bible study help is a bookmark.

That being said, I am now continuing my own personal study in John’s epistles. While reading 1 John the writer uses the analogy of light & darkness. It doesn’t take much of a scholar to read that light represents God and the things of God and darkness represents all that is evil. Christ-follower, know that this concept of walking in Light is not a one time decision but a series of ongoing day by day, second by second decisions. I started jotting down some of the contrasting ideas between someone walking in darkness v/s walking in light.

WALKING IN DARKNESS: no fellowship with God (1 John 1:6)
WALKING IN LIGHT: walks with God & other believers (1 John 1:7)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: denies sin problems (1 John 1:8)
WALKING IN LIGHT: confesses sin as needed (1 John 1:9)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: does not obey God’s commands (1 John 2:4)
WALKING IN LIGHT: obeys God’s commands (1 John 2:5)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: hates his brothers or sisters…namely fellow Christ-followers (1 John 2:9, 2:11)
WALKING IN LIGHT: loves his brothers or sisters (1 John 2:10)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: loves evil in the world…lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, greed. (1 John 2:15-16)
WALKING IN LIGHT: walks as Jesus (1 John 2:16), does right (1 John 2:29)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: denies Jesus is the unique Son of God, the Messiah (1 John 2:22-23)
WALKING IN LIGHT: believes Jesus is the unique Son of God (1 John 3:23

WALKING IN DARKNESS: embraces lawlessness (1 John 3:4)
WALKING IN LIGHT: depends on Jesus for purity (1 John 3:1), the world doesn’t get this therefore does not respect this (1 John 3:3)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: ashamed at the notion of Jesus returning to Earth (1 John 2:28)
WALKING IN LIGHT: anticipating Jesus returning to Earth (1 John 2:28)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: hates people…which can lead to action (1 John 3:15) WALKING IN LIGHT: loves people, particularly other Christ-followers (1 John 3:11), the world doesn’t get this therefore are hated (1 John 3:13)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: spurns (turns away from in disgust) God’s appointed teachers (1 John 4:6)
WALKING IN LIGHT: willing to obey sound teaching because actions speak louder than words (1 John 3:18)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: does not love freely (1 John 4:8)
WALKING IN LIGHT: loves freely (1 John 4:7)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: does not believe the Gospel (1 John 5:12)
WALKING IN LIGHT: believes the Gospel (1 John 5:5)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: self controlled, which is swayed by the Enemy (1 John 5:19)
WALKING IN LIGHT: controlled/bridled by God (1 John 18-20)

WALKING IN DARKNESS: craves idols to worship (1 John 4:2-3)
WALKING IN LIGHT: is on guard against idolatry (1 John 5:21)

Let’s close like this, “If we walk in the light as he (Jesus) himself is in the light…”. If you need a place to camp out in the Word grab your bookmark, a pen, and open to 1 John.
