7 ARROWS : Colossians 2

Paul warns of a heresy that attempts to add to the finished work of Christ.

It’s an age-old problem- man-made additions set up to be equal with the Gospel.

Knowing Jesus is transformational.

People try to add to the finished work of Christ when they believe Jesus’ work isn’t enough. Even worse, they think their additions will be exactly what is needed to accomplish what Jesus could not.

Let me roots be planted on the foundation of Christ alone.

The idea of improving Christ’s work is ridiculous.

Lord Jesus, thank you for doing everything necessary to bring me close to God.

7 ARROWS : Colossians 1:24-29

The mystery of Christ is revealed to these saints.

This letter was written from a Roman prison. Any mention of present sufferings would be immediately understood- street credit.

Jesus is the unveiled mission piece of the puzzle of the Old Testament- how God would make mankind whole again.

We need Spirit opened eyes to see and appreciate the beauty of the mystery of Christ revealed.

Work toward the maturity of others for the glory of God.

Suffering and afflictions are the means God uses to spread the Gospel like wildfire.

Spirit of God, open my eyes wide to the majesty, glory, and beauty of Christ!

7 ARROWS : Colossians 1:15-23

This hymn emphasizes the essential nature of Christ and his work of reconciliation.

What a theologically rich description of Jesus.

If you want to know the character and nature of God the Father look at Jesus.

We were once all far from God as his enemies, but no longer.

Remain grounded and steadfast in Christ.

This narrative of God’s great rescue mission is nothing short of amazing.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your amazing grace!

7 ARROWS : Colossians 1:1-14

Paul gives thanks to God for the church of Colosse and prays for them.

This is a rich and eloquent prayer from a trusted mentor.

God is the great rescuer.

We need knowledge and understanding because our default is ignorance and confusion.

Be filled!

We can learn about the character and nature of God in verses 9-14.

Thank you Father for your great rescue.

7 ARROWS : Philippians 4:10-21

Paul closes his letter with gratitude and a tone of contentment.

Gratitude is always well received.

God alone is what we need- our source of contentment.

Hardship does not create discontentment, but rather reveals what is already in the heart.

Find contentment in Christ.

Contentment is something everyone longs for, but it doesn’t manifest according to situations.

Lord Jesus, may I find my identity and contentment in you.

7 ARROWS : Philippians 3:12-21

Paul focuses the attention of the church toward the goal- Jesus enthroned and proclaimed.

Paul points out bad examples and good examples .

God transforms all who submit to his authority.

Mankind is creative in their sin. Some even attempt to justify it.

Learn from examples- both good and bad.

Eternal perspective is very helpful- particularly in the middle of hardship.

Father, thank you for your heavenly promises based on the finished work of Christ.

7 ARROWS : Philippians 3:1-11

Paul lays out his impressive religious pedigree and then says it is all worthless garbage compared to knowing Christ.

Paul’s pedigree was very impressive to the original hearers/readers.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is of the highest importance.

Men like to brag because their identity is wrapped up in their accomplishments.

My identity is in Christ alone.

Great conversation here in how the most important accomplishments are meaningless compared to knowing Christ.

Lord Jesus, thank you that my identity is wrapped up in you!

7 ARROWS : Philippians 2:19-30

Paul hopes this church will welcome his friends and co-laborers in the gospel.

This is a very practical section. Paul is not always welcome in churches but he wants his younger friends to have.

The gospel message is more important than health or safety.

There are genuine risks that are beyond our control.

Take godly risks when the Holy Spirit gives the green light.

There are always Christ-followers who are suffering for one reason or another. This could be of great encouragement.

Father, give wisdom so I will know when to risk and when not to risk.

7 ARROWS : Philippians 2:12-18

We are to follow Jesus’ goodness and humility to shine brightly in a dark world.

This is a big challenge for the people to be on mission where God has planted them.

God is pure and to. be worshipped in purity.

Obedience does not happen on accident.

Shine!

The “shine like stars” analogy is strong here- great conversation.

Lord Jesus, you are my light! Help my face be pointed toward you so I can shine for your glory.
